In the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes, enjoy a fascinating and revitalising stay at the Splendid Resort.
Built at the end of the 19th century, the Splendid retains its splendour whilst offering you all modern comforts following a complete renovation (spa, fitness, flat-screen TV, free wi-fi...)
The Splendid Hôtel was inaugurated on 1st July 1881 and quickly welcomed distinguished guests including Guy de Maupassant who wrote Mont-Oriol there. All of the high society names were to be seen at the Splendid. The Nouvel Hôtel was inaugurated in 1895. From 1914 to 1919, the 2 adjacent hotels were used as a hospital. The roaring twenties saw France’s well-to-do and chic clientele rub shoulders with notables from South America and colonial celebrities of the time. Even the stock market crash and the introduction of paid holidays in 1936 had no incidence on its number of visitors. During the Second World War, Châtel Guyon became the capital of the youth camps with its headquarters based at the Splendid. On 28 August 1944, a fire broke out on the 5th floor and the repairs enabled the Splendid and the Nouvel Hôtel to be joined together.
Life at the hotel continued and in 1963, a decision was made to offer clients luxury facility for thermal spa treatments along with the creation of a sauna and an outdoor pool. These measures proved vital to the Splendid’s popularity. In March 2000, the Splendid, the thermal park, the casino and the thermal spa became part of the Société Française des Casinos (SFC).In XXX, the Compagnie d’Hôtels purchased the Splendid to make it into a resort, one of only a few in Auvergne. A vast renovation programme was undertaken to offer clients a contemporary-style hotel with all modern conveniences without losing any of the charms of the past.
